Dr. Jonathan Yawson at a Valentine’s Day party announced the intention to start the Presbyterian Church of Ghana in the Portland area. This announcement created some excitement among people, leading to follow up calls to Dr. Yawson about when the church would start. However, due to some resource constraints, there was a delay in starting the church.
Before the congregation was started, discussions took place among Dr. Jonathan Yawson, Mrs. Afua Yawson, Dr. Ebenezer Jones-Mensah and Mrs. Laudina Jones-Mensah to start the church in the coming month.
On October 12, 2019, at a meeting between the Jones- Mensah family and the Yawson family at the Yawson family residence, a decision was made to start the meeting as a church the following Sunday at the Yawson family’s residence without further delay. The service was scheduled for every Sunday from 10am – 12 noon.
Therefore on Sunday, October 20, 2019, the first worship service was held at the Yawson residence but it however started at 11am. Present at the service were: Dr. Ebenezer Jones-Mensah, Mrs. Laudina Jones-Mensah, Dr. Jonathan Yawson, Mrs. Afua Yawson, Dr. Mrs. Nana Akua Turkson, and Miss Fosuhemaa Tufuor.
Also, at the service were the Jones-Mensah family’s three children (Aveline, Ian and Ivan), Dr. Mrs. Nana Akua Turkson’s son (Kweku), Miss Fosuhemaa’s daughter (Khalisah) and the three children from the Yawson Family (Melissa, Alexander and Jayden). The service followed the Presbyterian Church of Ghana Order of Service format. Dr. Jonathan Yawson preached the sermon.
